CREATING A JAR CANDLE HOLDER

This jar candle is quick to make, inexpensive and simply stunning!

Double jar candle

What you'll need:

~ 1 large, wide mouthed jar & lid
~ 1 jar that fits inside it & can accommodate a candle
~ 1 votive, pillar or column candle that won't touch jar sides
~ ribbon (two or more colors is best)
~ long matches to light the candle
~ your choice of decorative fillings

Hint: If you can't find the right sized jars at home, try your local recycling center.

Thoroughly clean out each jar and remove the labels. Let them dry.

If the lid of the larger jar has print or pictures, paint it or cover it with fabric or paper.

Place the smaller jar inside the larger. The more space between the walls of the two jars, the better. The outer jar will get warm, but it should never get too hot to touch.

Secure the small jar to keep it centered. We used a loop of duct tape on its underside. Museum putty, available at crafts stores, also works. Hot glue may work as well, though we haven't tested it.

Collect your decorations and arrange them carefully between the walls of the two jars. We used fallen oak leaves and kept the spacing loose to allow light through. You can also use ribbons, tinsel, clear marbles, bits of colored glass, translucent beads, sheer bits of cloth and so on.

Tie your ribbon(s) around the top of the outer jar. Get creative! For instance, ribbons with vertical ribbing with curl if you firmly run the back (non-sharp side) of your scissor blade across the underside of the ribbon.

Place your candle in the center of the smaller jar. To secure the candle, use hot wax or hot glue on its underside.

You can use this candle year round, changing the decorations any time you like. Try feathers, flower petals or wrapped hard candies for other dramatic effects. If you won't be using the candle for an extended period, or if you're giving it as a gift, use the lid.

Enjoy!
